Morning Of Gold Kwadwo Juantuah is a Ghanaian poet currently studying in the United States. His work has received much praise and he has been featured in publications around the world. Copies of his book, Morning of Gold, can be found in major online bookstores like Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Target, and E-bay. A generous donation from the launch of his book was used to help in the education of children in Ghana and Kwadwo continues to explore such avenues of using his written word to make the world a better place. | Preface to the book I find it really interesting that I write poetry, let alone have a collection of poems that has been compiled into a book. I never liked poetry and I still cannot call or see myself as a poet. As a young boy, I saw poetry to be a complicated form of writing only attempted by great sages or people who wanted to give students a miserable time. This perception changed during the McMillan writing contest for Africa. I was a very little boy then but still decided to try. In the course of my research, I came across poetry in a completely different form. I encountered poetry that sounded beautiful, almost musical and magical, and still made complete sense. I particularly remember falling in love with Blakes’s poem, “Tyger, tyger, burning bright.” Gradually, my eyes were opened to the beauty that is poetry and the latent power that she possesses.
Yet, I did not start writing until one day when I felt utterly betrayed by a close friend. Left with no one to talk to, I poured out my emotions with just pen and paper. That experience began my love affair with poetry. I poured out all my heart and kept on writing and writing until I could write no more. Then as I wrote my last word, a heavenly sense of peace descended on me. I had poured out all the pain and in its place was a beautifully indescribable feeling. That is how I began my journey with poetry.
As you may notice, these poems are not purely academic writings meant to be dissected word by word by some poor students and then left on the shelf forever. These are plain but beautiful writings that come from the core of my being and even personas that I do not know. It is a book filled with with my tears and sorrows, fears and aspirations, dreams and goals.
Please join me as I fall in and out of love. Help me in my quest to find the meaning of love. Protect me, if you can, from giving my heart out to someone who will only break it. See the world through the eyes of a little boy, sometimes absolutely gorgeous, other times terribly horrendous. Share my tears when I bitterly cry for my beloved Africa and even as you lament with me listen to the praise songs of that beautiful continent. Above all, help me in my search for the purpose of life.
This book is more than an anthology of poems. It is my humble gift to the world. I hope that through the eyes of a young boy, we shall learn to sing, dare to dream, pause to breathe, see the beauty of nature and above all feel the pulse that is the heartbeat of life.
